The  SIC (coordination of the Contemporary Independent Scene) is born.

On 20 April, the coordination of the Independent Scene was set up at the Rialtosantambrogio, Rome. The Roman contemporary independent scene represents a portion of relevant culture of our city, which is still poorly known and under appreciated. Actually, Rome competes against the cultural offers of other European capitals mainly thanks to the work carried out in these places. This work takes the shape of live shows performed by cultural associations deriving from the national fringe culture, which is not molded to commercial norms and so feeds the humus for the generational turnover both of the theatre and its fruition. This culture attracts a heterogeneous public, both local and international, as must occur in a city like Rome with such a large impact on cultural tourism.

On the morning of 20 March 2009, a public meeting among artists, groups, operators, organizers, companies, productions of this scene (about 200 groups and people) and the councilors for Culture of the City of Rome (Umberto Croppi), of the Province of Rome (Cecilia D'Elia) and of the Lazio Region (Giulia Rodano) took place at the Cinema Farnese.

The meeting made official an initial commitment: the creation of a combined councilor table on the three topics proposed during the public meeting.
1- the recognition and the valorisation of the contemporary independent scene, considered a resource; actually, the independent and innovative culture calls for the opening and foundation of a constructive dialogue that makes public administrations consider the problems specific to independent cultural production.

2-the accessibility, support and increase of spaces set aside for the contemporary and independent scene of the territory, the spaces planned for the city in the future, existing spaces and lack of spaces.

3- the diversification and the adaptation of channels for the use of public resources, making them more appropriate to the existing situation, enabling a process of review of the laws, in order to introduce facilitations for satisfying the size and specificities of the independent scene and providing tools for developing its autonomy and competitiveness on the market.

The table represents a constructive and structuring process for the coordination that goes beyond the political majorities that alternate year after year, bringing about discussions with new interlocutors every time. It aims to identify critical aspects, to propose solutions and interventions for a cultural system that does not work, that shows up gaps, lacks and deficiencies. It hopes for the approval of a policy for project execution, removed and therefore independent from the underlying principles strictly related to the market, that is valued for what it really is, participating directly in its own evolution and placed in the condition of working at its best, being treasured and not considered a matter to be resolved in the contingency and need of the moment.
